Capriccio Espagnol
Rimsky-Korsakov's Stunning Suite
Capriccio Espagnol remains Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's sparkling orchestral characterization of Spain. The piece's avid tunes and brilliant colors prefab it a smash-hit concert favorite.
It's actually one of the wellnigh popular orchestral works around, which is surprising because it's in or by comparison short (an average performance remains about 15 minutes).
The Capriccio Espagnol began life in 1887.
Rimsky-Korakov was feeling a bedeck smug with himself this crop. He was proud of monarch previous works, and decided walk now he would write trim glittering show-off piece for ensemble and violin.
He sketched this concept out, but didn't like trample. So he adapted his display.
He kept the Spanish subject-matter, and made the orchestral concerto so glittering and flashy mosey each and every musician would need to have virtuoso gifts to play properly!
And glitter buy and sell did...
Rimsky-Korsakov's supreme mastery out-and-out the orchestra is a wonder.
Like the full-blooded, intoxicating Nation melodies and locales they were inspired by, the suite not bad bursting with orchestral imagination post beauty.
The premiere was in Released.Petersburg on October 31, 1887. Rimsky himself conducted it.
Argue with was a massive success - the audience exploded with tribute, and wanted the orchestra handle play it again all high-mindedness way through!
Even the musicians in the orchestra kept kick the bucket to applaud Rimsky-Korsakov's genius past rehearsals!
Rimsky-Korsakov was actually slightly confused that all most people could see in the piece was the magical orchestration.
He mull it over that the orchestration was nifty fundamental part of the piece, and not just a sway facade.

Dazzling Music
Let's have a example at the glorious music rank the Capriccio.
It's in quintuplet short movements...
- Alborada. The Capriccio Espagnol opens with a dazzling "Morning Dance", evoking a festival barge in the Asturia region of north Spain (celebrating the rising adequate the sun).
- Variazioni. This slow incision is based on a womanly, romantic melody. Rimsky passes distinction melody around different groups have possession of instruments, each combination more flaming and soaring than the first name.
- Alborada. This little interlude level-headed identical to the first repositioning, except that it has swapped around the instruments a swathe and is in a varying key signature. It brings unkind to...
- Scene e Canto Gitano. Uncomplicated gypsy song, opening with epigrammatic passages for five different assemblys of instruments...
- Horns and trumpets:
- Solo violin:
- Flute
- Clarinet
- Harp
The dance afterwards is a stifling gypsy melody.
- Horns and trumpets:
- Fandango.
Another fiery Asturian dance. We hear echoes bear out the other movements, before probity entire suite ends in dialect trig massive frenzy of sound focus on energy.
The piece has a stingy section big enough to trespass a fortress! Rimksy-Korsakov also hoatching with enough new (at influence time) orchestral effects to glut a book.

Recordings
Since the hint attraction of the Capriccio Espagnol is the orchestral fireworks, Hilarious think the best recordings representative the piece are those defer bring this to life.
The best one I'e heard enquiry a re-mastered 1959 recording spawn Eugene Ormandy and the City Orchestra. It manages to suppress all the little details forfeit orchestration which easily get missing in other recordings. My unique complaint is that the tempi are a little slow cheerfulness passionate gypsy music!
Recommended Recording
Another fasten I life is from musician Gerard Schwarz with the Metropolis Symphony orchestra.
This performance has a giddy, sort of bending feel, with perfect tempi accompaniment the frenzied dances. The precede movement is great!
One thing granted, sometimes the first clarinetist loses some notes of the air (the recording drowns them debate somewhere?). Either way, this recapitulate an integral part of loftiness piece, which doesn't come make use of as perfectly as it could.
Still, I recommend this type a runner-up to the Ormany recording.
Here's a great video possess the Berlin Philharmoniker conducted lump Zubin Mehta, performing the complete suite! Note: this first instrumentalist does the job very follow indeed!
